Adidas release Mason Greenwood statement amid claims he's set to make Man Utd return

Mar 12, 2024

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has not played a minute for the club in over a year, with a decision set to be made on the England international's Old Trafford future

Manchester United kit manufacturer Adidas has issued a statement about "inaccurate" reporting amid speculation over Mason Greenwood's future with the Premier League side.

Greenwood was arrested and subsequently charged with assault, attempted rape and coercive and controlling behaviour in January 2022. All charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February of this year.

The England international forward was suspended by United in January 2022 when the initial charges were brought, and the Red Devils said Greenwood would remain suspended, pending the outcome of an internal club investigation. The 21-year-old remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, and the club has yet to publicly reach a decision over his future.

"After inaccurate and speculative reporting within the media it's important for us to clarify that Adidas has had no discussions with Manchester United regarding any member of their playing squad," an Adidas statement read. "We play no role in any decisions made regarding any member of the team or staff at the club."

Previously, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag had issued a statement of his own during the club's pre-season programme. Ten Hag was appointed to his role in April 2022 and took over at a later date, meaning Greenwood has not been part of the first-team squad during the Dutchman's tenure. "It's a club decision," Ten Hag said. "Of course, I have said my ideas and opinions but it’s a club decision. We all have to accept that."

It is understood that United's stance on Greenwood will have no bearing on the club's summer transfer business. United have been in talks over a deal for Danish forward Rasmus Hojlund, who was an unused substitute in Atalanta's pre-season victory over Bournemouth.

Earlier in the summer, reports had suggested Greenwood could move to Atalanta as part of a deal for Hojlund. However, Atalanta are only thought to be entertaining a cash offer for their player, who scored nine Serie A goals last season.

Greenwood, a product of Manchester United's academy, made his debut for the club as a teenager during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time as manager. He scored his first senior goal for the club in September 2019, shortly before his 18th birthday.

The Yorkshire-born player has scored 35 goals in 129 games for the Red Devils, with 22 of those goals coming in the Premier League. He also has one senior cap for England, coming on as a substitute against Iceland in 2020.

Greenwood's most recent season around United's first team saw him score six goals in 24 appearances, with five of those goals coming in the Premier League. His most recent appearance came in a 1-0 victory over West Ham in January 2022.
